The reasons why you should go to Duluth

So you are going to Duluth?

Duluth is like … a mini San Francisco (lots of hills and a bay city) … but colder. Duluth has some killer breweries.

Duluth is thriving if you know where to look.

Here are my recommendations…

  • Bent Paddle Brewing – Great beer. Small and new in a sparse area of the city, but fun atmosphere.

  • Fitger’s Brewhouse. Probably Duluth’s oldest brewery and hotel. A classic. Fun brewery tour.

  • PortLand Malt Shoppe – View of lake superior from the bluffs. Open April through October.

  • Lief Ericson Park and Rose Garden – Walk here from the PortLand Malt Shoppe. Great for stunning views of the lake. A long narrow park on the bluffs with lots of walking trails.
  • Canal Park Area – Not a park (might be a park around there but I have not seen it) per se, but where the action is in Duluth. Lost of shops, restaurants and check out the Lift Bridge where the ships come in.
  • Vitta Pizza – Right in Canal Park. Great brick oven pizza at a good price. Giant framed posters of Italian movie stars will watch you eat.iu
  • Gooseberry Falls – Big scenic waterfalls, some fun hiking trails.  A few miles North of Duluth on the coast.
  • Electric Fetus records – Since 1968, waving the music indie store banner in Minnesota.
  • Pattison State Park – Right across of Duluth in Superior, Wisconsin. The highest waterfalls in Wisconsin and the fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains.
  • Jay Cooke State Park – The swinging bridge. See below.

  • Canada is close. Thunder Bay anyone?
  • Grand Marais – Fun, touristy town North of Duluth, worth day trip.
  • Boundary waters – Not too far from here.
  • Tofte – Cool little town if you want a more small-townish place to stay. Lots of cabins to rent around here.
  • New Scenic Cafe – The place to eat of you are a foodie and have some cash.
  • Glensheen – Giant mansion with a fun tour. There is quite a backstory here but I will let you Google that if you don’t already know.
  • Bob Dylan was born there.
  • It is on Lake Superior, the site of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the song that goes with it.
  • Burrito Union – Fresh and creative burritos and atmosphere in downtown Duluth.
